Information for Law Enforcement Officials
On behalf of the Juvenile Justice Advisory Committee (JJAC) of the Children, Youth and Families Department, we would like to update the law enforcement community about the recent changes to the Children's Code regarding juveniles held in adult jails or lockup facilities and compliance with the sight and sound restrictions. JJAC contracts with a compliance monitor who conducts site visits to law enforcement to ensure statutory compliance. The statutory requirements, required form and the compliance monitor contact information can be found below.

Due to recent statutory changes in the Children's Code (32A-14-4.1) all adult jails and law enforcement lockups must file an annual report regarding compliance with federal requirements for the temporary holding of juveniles. An adult jail or lockup used as a temporary holding facility for alleged delinquent offenders must certify its compliance with the sight and sound restrictions and length of stay requirements.
